Bad Crash Ends Oyster Bed Hopes

Our visit to Oyster Bed Speedway in PEI was one I was really looking forward too. I love this little track and seem to run not too bad here. Our crew were fantastic, making many changes to get us better but we couldn’t get below 13:693. Most fast cars were in the 4’s and 5’s.
Jack was amazing again both spotting and making changes on the car with me. Bobby, Emily and Ray all did their part, especially in the feature when we were handling so bad, right front the start pretty well. I came in on the competition yellow, but was down one lap. The crew took air out of the LR tire to help the car turn better and I went back out.
We got the lucky dog. The cars were doubling up when I went back out and to my shock I couldn’t drive the car it was so loose I was almost spinning out at 30 mph. It was then I realized my RR tire was going down. I messaged to my crew, as we were still going around under the yellow “I have a RR flat tire”. I headed back into the pits and they changed it getting me back out before the restart. We had 4 practice tires we were allowed to use in case of a flat. I marked their depth before we put on the new tires. The best tire was a 5 in depth. It was our RF spare. I went back out and made the restart before the green. However the car still would not turn. The race went green until another yellow when a car needed towing, and again we were down a lap.
I went into the pits and asked them to check the rear stagger. It was less than 3″…not enough variance, should be 3 to 3 1/4″. The spare we put on was only 85 1/2″ and needed to be bogger to give us the stagger we needed. They rotated the tires on the outside because the the RF tire was bigger and that would give us what we needed.
I returned again to the track with 121 laps remaining. But it wasn’t to be this time, our night would end with a bad crash on lap 121 restart when the field got together going into turn one. I couldn’t stop and the track was completely blocked. I hit #11 Jordan Veinotte very hard on the RF, doing lots of damage to the car. Congrats to PEI’s Robbie MacEwen on his win, his 2nd Tour race in his career.
Here are some of the parts we know we need so far:
RF-spindle
RF–strut
Front steel bumper’
Front nose
Braces for the front bumper
Body braes
We have started work on the car and should have it ready by Thursday. Lots of dollars and hours again for this repair.
Our next race is back to Oyster Bed Speedway next Saturday August 3rd. My Ontario crew chief Jim Hulzinga and his wife Marie will be there.
